Every Friday under the late afternoon Sun, men from the Indian sub-continent gather at a field of sand near the fish market in Deira, Dubai, to socialize with their compatriots and engage in a friendly game of cricket or a bout of wrestling popularly known as kushti. The crowd consists of day labourers, taxi drivers, dock workers. These folks live at the edge of mainstream society that Dubai has become so famously known for in the past decade with its tallest tower, biggest mall & up-scale gated community style living. For a short time, these men turn into Sand Lords, combing an ancient martial art & performance art into a highly entertaining affair for a large crowd. It is not known where these folks will gather once the construction crew move in to transform the empty site into a commercial complex.
